How I came across NAS

The ever expanding world of computers have ushered so many electronic gadgets. These are devices that can be used in almost all aspects of life may this be for entertainment, research, business; the list will endlessly go on.

computer crash
Many of us love movies, music and books we frequent Amazon or iTunes to get these stuff. And these things have become precious possessions for many. I consider myself an audiophile and a movie buff as well, almost 80 percent of my computer hard drive are music and movie files. I always fear that I will lose all these if my computer will crash; a terrible thing that can possibly happen regardless of how powerful your PC is. And for this very reason I went ahead and hunt for some solutions.
network attached storage

I came across NAS or network attached storage. And I guess this will ultimately solve my problem. It is actually a small computer dedicated for saving files. This computer does not need a keyboard or a display screen; you can just access it via your local network. This will mean that I can now share my files with other people connected to my local network. The operating system of the computer is not like MS Windows which is multipurpose; it is really dedicated to manage your files. Another good feature NAS have is RAID capabilities. RAID stands for redundant array of independent disk a backup system where it mirrors a content of a hard drive to a second one.

NAS comes in different packages some vary in the number of hard drives it can accommodate others vary on features like software applications bundled with the package.

I will definitely get my own NAS. This will totally solve my worries about data lose and to add to that I can now easily share my files too.

My experience with Palm Desktop 6.2

Palm Hotsync ManagerThe Palm Pre created hype in the gadget world today. Palm is trying to regain its dominance in the smart phone market. But Palm Pre is yet to come, for now we are still stuck with the good old Palm OS. The old operating system is still good, very user friendly and a very useful gadget. Just like any other gadgets and any other software, the Palm Treo and Palm Desktop software is not perfect. Many users including myself encountered problems with Hotsync.

The latest Palm Desktop software released by Palm is the Palm Desktop 6.2. I have tested the software myself and I have encountered some challenges with it. I setup Palm Desktop 6.2 on my desktop PC and on my netbook. I first performed a Hotsync on my desktop PC and it was successful. Then I proceeded doing a Hotsync to my netbook and it froze on the Datebook or Calendar application. With my previous version of the Palm Desktop I was able to sync my Palm Treo perfectly on both machine. To solve the problem I then uninstalled Palm Desktop 6.2 both from my desktop PC and my netbook. I downloaded Palm Desktop 4.2 from Palm.com website and installed it in both machine. I tried performing a Hotsync on both machine again and this time it worked on both.

That’s my experience on Palm Desktop software version 6.2. I still have some other challenges with the Palm Treo and Palm Desktop, most of them I have resolved on my own. I will be posting some of this solution in the future.

Palm Pre and Palm webOS, the rebirth of Palm

I really love Palm in fact I have written an article about Palm in the past. The article talks about how they pioneered the PDA and smartphone devices. But as what I’ve said in the past Palm got old. With the iPhone in the market Palm has been wiped out from the map. Recently I also wrote about CES, in fact it was my previous article. I talk about Palm and the rumors that they will be announcing a operating system tagged to be an iPhone killer. In their teaser the word newness and amazing has been stressed out.

Today is the big day for Palm. Or should I say today is the rebirth of Palm. It started with their redesigned website and now the announcement of their new operating system, the Palm webOS and their newest product the Palm Pre. From the reports Engadget, Gizmodo and Crunchgear, the new Palm Pre will definitely be the next big thing. It will now be an iPhone, Android and Palm race. Now what makes the Palm Pre amazing, for one the Palm Touchstone wireless charging, the accelerometer, a very nice UI and many others.
